CHAPTER EIGHT

From the first second I opened my eyes, all I could think about was how happy I was to go to the holiday charity auction tonight with Dad, Chester, and Sage. I stretched my arms as far up in the air as I could before peeking at Chester, who was still asleep. I snuck out of bed, hoping not to disturb Chester and looked out my window. It was raining, and the air near my window felt damp, so I grabbed my fluffy pink robe and strolled into the kitchen. Dad was already dressed in shorts and a T-shirt and on the phone. I stopped to listen. He must be talking to Sage because I heard him say:

“I’m looking forward to seeing you tonight as well.” He turned and shot me a smile. “Looks like sleepyhead Luci just woke up, and what’s this? Here comes a groggy Chester. I’m going to have to run. I want to make Luci breakfast this morning. She always makes mine. See you at four-thirty.” Dad hung up and looked at me.

“That was Sage. She called to thank us. Cosmic Cosmo, or as I like to call him, C.C., is adjusting to his new home, and she wanted us to know how much she appreciated our help in finding him. What can I make my sleepyhead angel for breakfast? Waffles? Pancakes? Scrambled eggs? “

I smiled. Dad was way too cute. I knew his specialty was scrambled eggs, but I thought he needed a break. “Thanks, but I’m fine with toast and peanut butter.”

“You realize you’re making this too easy for me. Not fair.” Dad laughed. Since he had already made his coffee, he placed my two pieces of whole wheat bread in the toaster. “You know, that sounds pretty good. I think I’ll have the same.”

We enjoyed everything about breakfast, especially spending time together. Dad revealed, “You know Mattie from my staff. Well, she found an abandoned puppy yesterday so cute that when she returned to the clinic with him, everyone in the waiting room wanted to take the pup home. I sure didn’t want to hurt any of my patients’ feelings, so I advised them that anyone interested in adopting him would find him at the island shelter. The shelter staff would decide. Anyway, I named the puppy Casanova because of the way women swooned over him.” We got a chuckle out of his choice of names.

Later that day, after Chester and I returned from our afternoon walk, we passed by Dad’s bedroom. His door was open, so we peeked in. We noticed he had placed his wedding ring on the dresser in front of Mom and Dad’s wedding photo. The gold ring sparkled in the small ray of sunlight streaming in from his window. I don’t understand why he would take off his ring? He never did that before. Maybe he wanted to clean it? It reminded me of the time when his sister, my Aunt Clare, visited and asked him why he still wore the ring after all these years.
